115 graduates of Garden State Gridirons compete in Ivy League

by Dennis Wilson, President - Metropolitan New York Football Writers Association

Ivy League schools are not only bastions of academic excellence, the gridirons of what is often referred to as the "Ancient Eight" are venues of football lore with names such as Yale's Walter Camp, Princeton's Dick Kazmeier plus Cornell's duo of Ed Marinaro and Glenn "Pop" Warner.
Princeton versus Yale in 1903 wasn't just a matchup of undefeated teams, it produced the oldest collegiate football video footage, thanks to a Thomas Alva Edison-sponsored production company.
The Ivy League's historic "Fifth-Down Game" took place in 1940. Cornell, the nation's No. 1-ranked team was trailing Dartmouth 3-0when the Big Red was mistakenly allowed a "fifth down" when Cornell promptly converted for a 7-3 victory. The error was confirmed on game-film the next day and Cornell forfeited to Dartmouth. The reversal ended Cornell's 18-game unbeaten string and remains the only time a college football result has been decided off the field.
