78 graduates of Garden State Gridirons compete in the BIG EAST Conference

by Dennis Wilson, President - Metropolitan New York Football Writers Association

Newport, Rhode Island and a sumptuous clambake keyed the new look of the BIG EAST Conference's media meeting as Cincinnati, Louisville and South Florida were welcomed to the elite eight-team format that ranges from the East Coast to the Midwest. The incumbents are Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse and West Virginia.
While athletic directors, coaches, players and members of the media dined at a buffet that included steamed clams, mussels and lobsters, Commissioner Mike Tranghese welcomed the new additions and announced that the BIG EAST Conference faced the toughest football schedule in the nation according to a story published by CBS/Sportsline.
Louisville, which has a pair of Don Bosco Prep graduates joining the Cardinals as they begin their first season in the league, received 23 of a possible 24 first-place votes cast by media representatives for cover the league teams on a regular basis to win the conference crown. Darius Mann, a 5-11, 190-pounder will look to see action in the defensive secondary and Brian Roche is a 6-5, 285-pound newcomer to the offensive front wall for the Cardinals who finished 2004 with an 11-1 when they edged Boise State 44-40 in the Liberty Bowl.
Rutgers has 48 New Jersey residents on its roster as the Scarlet Knights were ranked sixth in the pre-season poll. However, the Scarlet Knights posses some the league's top offensive skill players and led the BIG EAST in quarterback sacks last season.
